About SWINNER
Our team logo is a picture with two fish tanks. There is an obvious contrast between the two fish tanks. One is crowded with fishes and the other one is originally empty. Suddenly, we witness a unique fish tries to jump from one to the other so that it can enjoy a tank of water itself. Clearly, the fish not only jumps out of one tank but also break the mould! That’s what innovation means to be---daring to challenge old style and make it outdated!
Our team name is closed related to our group picture. The name “Swinner” is a combination of swimmer and winner, just like the “innovative” fish swimming out of old territory and becoming the winner!

Our logo and name suggests that we are doing a different but right thing to make a difference. Probably after our graduation, we can bring the new idea and thought from the course to run our own business!
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing up this interesting story. Though I haven’t had owned one before, I can still try this paging device when dinning out at some food court nowadays. (Somehow it’s convenient that I don’t need to stand at the counter and wait.) I agree that emerging of mobile phone is one of the main reasons for its failure. But the mechanism behind is, pagers need telecommunication service providers to support its service. Unlike cellphones that people can directly call others, pagers somehow need third party (telecommunication companies) to transmit the message, or even just simply page telephone numbers. Hence, the bargaining power of raw material suppliers of pager may be low, but the bargaining power of its service provider may be high. Especially after the invention of cellphones, telecommunication companies should shift to become cellphones supporter as the operating cost can decrease (e.g. hire less staffs for pagers’ “secretarial service” for leaving messages only) while the marginal profits will be higher because there were not much competitors in the industry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this story. Your story has showed me clearly about the reason why the pager failed. I remember that most people owned pagers while I was little. As a leading role, pagers was successful. It changed the life what people had never thought before, and it made life easier which matched with the trend.I agree with your point "Don’t listen to your customers without your own judgment towards future market". As for pagers, it was launched and succeed because the company had right judgment about the market. The innovation "forced" customers to adapt to the change. Pagers are still used in a small range to fulfill some companies' needs.Technology and innovation are growing, maybe in the future, an amazing and advanced "pager" will be launched to change our life again.
